You can confirm the date of the next test by looking on the calendar.
Because the instructors are working with so many students during the week we generally do not remember everything that a student is strong or weak in. The week before a test the instructors will look at all of the students that have the appropriate (Red, Yellow, and White) stripes. A student or parent can ask an instructor prior to class what they really need to focus on in order to test. Most of the time, the instructor will try to remember what they noticed during class so that they can give feedback to the student / parent. Please see the Belts page to get more information.
You are highly encouraged to make up a class if you miss one. You paid for it, you might as well take it. You can make up the class on any night at any of the locations except for the main dojo. Only main dojo students are allowed to train at this location.

Testing is where the student proves to a panel that they have earned the right to advance to the next belt. A belt test is run similar to a normal class except that the instructors are not helping the students during the test. The students will go through the Basics, Self Defense, and Kata (Kam Sah / Formal Six Count / Forms). They will then present their public speaking and board break in front of the audience. For Green belts and up they will also have to spar for a predefined number of rounds.
When a student test for Green belt and up they will have to present their student binder to the panel.
Read the curriculum for detailed information.
Students are required to participate in sparring starting at Orange belt. Sparring is done at the end of each class. Sparring in class is a very important part of the students learning.
The student must have hand and feet gear, chest protection, mouth piece, head gear, and face shield. Males must also have groin protection.
Sparring equipment can be purchased online, at the main dojo in Hurst, or by filling out an order envelope that is available in the instructors box. Simply fill out the form, put a check or cash in the envelope and place it into the slot in the top of the box.
You can acquire it however you want. It is slightly more expensive to purchase the equipment from Legends Martial Arts, but it is much easier. You can also find equipment on EBay and other online stores, but it can sometimes take a while for it to come in and if it does not fit then you have to deal with that problem.
White, Yellow, and Gold belts will participate in the Field Day portion of a tournament. This is where the student exhibits their mastery of the skills that they have learned in class. Please review the tournament area for more information. You should also review the rules for the Field Day competition. These students are also eligible for the self defense competition as well.
Yes. But you need an instructors permission and you need to purchase a full set of sparring gear.
Master J. Pat Burleson, the first national karate champion and founder of our system, has training in various styles of martial arts receiving numerous ranks including: a black belt in Judo, a 5th degree black belt in Aikido, and a 10th degree black belt in Taekwondo. He has spent a great deal of time as a boxer as well as currently training rigorously in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He blended all of his experience together and formed the system we know today as "American Karate". We utilize the kicking techniques of Taekwondo; the hand techniques of Japanese karate and western boxing; the throwing techniques of Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and Aikido; and present it to you with progressive teaching methods and positive reinforcement.
The simple answer is "No". You are not required to purchase the DVDs. It is only a tool to help learn the skills necessary to advance. You can also download PowerPoint documents for free that contain the same information.
The DVDs are very useful as a tool to train with at home. Many people have found them worth the nominal fee.
Many of the videos are available for free in the Learn Online section.
Please refer to the Belts page for the answer to this question.
